Unlacquered brass rainfall shower system with handheld sprayer and cross handles

How to Choose a Brass Shower System: Exposed vs Concealed, Rainfall vs Handheld

A shower system bundles the parts you would otherwise buy separately: the mixing valve and handles, an overhead shower head, and often a handheld sprayer and tub spout. Buying a matched set ensures everything fits together and ages in the same finish. Here is how to choose.

Exposed vs concealed

Exposed shower systems show the pipework on the wall, with a vertical riser running up to the rain head. They are the classic vintage look, and they are often easier to install in a renovation because less plumbing goes inside the wall.

Concealed systems hide the valve and pipes behind the tile, leaving only the trim, handles and shower head visible. They give a clean, modern look but need access inside the wall during installation.

Rainfall, handheld or both?

  • Rainfall shower head: a wide, gentle flow from above. Larger heads (8 to 12 inches) feel more luxurious but need good water pressure.
  • Handheld shower: great for rinsing hair, cleaning the shower, bathing kids or pets, and seated showering.
  • Both: most of our systems combine the two with a diverter so you can switch between them.

Valves and safety

Most US plumbing codes require anti-scald protection in showers, provided by a pressure-balance or thermostatic valve. Before buying any shower system, check the valve type and confirm what your local code requires with your plumber.

Shower and tub combos

If the shower is over a bathtub, choose a system with a tub spout. For a freestanding tub, see our freestanding tub filler guide.

Finish: why brass works so well

Solid brass is durable in wet environments. In unlacquered brass, the steam and water speed up the patina, so a shower system takes on an antique look faster than a kitchen faucet. Prefer it brighter? Towel-dry it now and then, as explained in our care guide.

Measure before you buy

  • Ceiling height (for exposed risers and rain head placement).
  • Distance between the valve and the shower head outlet.
  • Your existing rough-in valve, if you are only replacing trim.
