Bridge Kitchen Faucet Buying Guide: Sizes, Spouts, Handles and Finishes
Share
A bridge kitchen faucet connects the hot and cold valves with a horizontal “bridge,” with the spout rising from the middle. The design dates back more than a century and is still the signature look of farmhouse, English country and classic European kitchens. Here is how to choose the right one.
1. Check your sink and countertop holes
Most bridge faucets are deck-mounted and need two holes for the valves, typically spaced 8 inches on center. Some models also use a third hole for a side sprayer or soap dispenser. Count the holes in your sink or countertop before you shop; unused holes can be covered with a brass deck plate or filled with a soap dispenser.
2. Choose the spout shape
- High-arc gooseneck: the most popular option. It leaves plenty of room to fill tall pots and looks elegant over an apron-front sink.
- Low or lever-style spout: more compact and traditional, ideal under windows or low shelves.
- Pull-down bridge faucet: combines the classic bridge with a modern pull-down spray head, so you do not need a separate sprayer.
Make sure the spout reach lands water near the center of your sink bowl, especially with large farmhouse sinks.
3. Pick a handle style
Cross handles feel vintage and are easy to grip. Lever handles are quicker to operate with wet hands. White porcelain levers add a classic English touch. All of them pair beautifully with brass.
4. Decide on a side sprayer
A brass side sprayer is handy for rinsing dishes and cleaning the sink. Many bridge faucets come as a set with a matching sprayer, so the finish ages consistently.
5. Choose the finish
Unlacquered brass develops a natural patina over time and never peels. Brushed and polished gold tones stay brighter. Not sure which to pick? Read Unlacquered vs Lacquered vs Brushed Brass.
6. Installation tips
- Bridge faucets have two separate supply connections (hot and cold); confirm your shut-off valves are in good condition.
- Check the maximum deck thickness listed for the faucet, especially with thick stone countertops.
- When in doubt, have a licensed plumber install it.
